ROSE & RUBY >> Tina's Tiara

When our designer's mother, Tina, got engaged last year, she called on India to design her the perfect headpiece to go with her beautiful gold and cream dress. Here we outline the design process of a completely custom designed tiara.

Early Ideas
"I asked her to have a think about what style headpiece she would like. For example, would she prefer a rigid tiara style, set onto a band, or a more versatile piece set onto a comb? Would she like to have crystal elements, flowers or feathers even? What sort of look was she going for?

Tina decided she would like her headpeice to have some vintage influence in the design, which would tie in with the vintage gold and cream tones on her dress (monsoon.co.uk)."

Elements of the design
"She had also decided she'd like to add some pieces of jewellery that once belonged to her mother, and my grandmother. These included an old pearl necklace, and a small, gold, flower shaped earring. This was a lovely idea as these elements became her 'something old', as well as bringing some sentimental meaning into the peice. Tina also chose a necklace from www.monsoon.co.uk", and asked me to take apart and use it in the design."

Putting it all together
"We decided the design should be placed on a tiara band, as it would sit more securely in Tina's hair. She has a sensitive scalp, so I made the hairband from a soft, pliable metal that would hold the headband shape, without putting any pressure on Tina's head. I added small ivory organza petals and swarovski flowers, in the style of the flower earring, along the length of the band. The band was then covered in a pale gold thread, making it more comfortable to wear. To complete the look, the remaining vintage pearls were re-strung and entwined around the band.

Added to this was the pale mink tulle rosettes from the Monsoon necklace. These sat to the side of the head, just above the ear. I decided the rosettes needed some embellishment, so I added Swarovski crystals in Golden Shadow and Light Colerado Topaz, some of the vintage pearls, and extra wire detail.

Finally, I added some pretty ivory organza ribbon to the ends of the tiara, allowing Tina to tie a cute bow at the back of her hairstyle, while holding the tiara in place on her head."
